What is module coding?
Module coding refers to the process of using specialised equipment to program or configure a vehicle’s electronic control modules (ECMs or ECUs) to work with the car’s other systems.
Modern vehicles have various modules, like those controlling the engine, transmission, brakes, and more. Each module is a small computer that communicates with others to keep the car operating correctly.
How is module coding carried out?
When a module needs to be replaced, updated, or reprogrammed—perhaps after a repair or a change to the vehicle’s settings—it has to be “coded” or programmed to ensure it functions correctly with the rest of the car’s systems.
This coding involves connecting to the car’s onboard diagnostic (OBD) port using a scan tool or diagnostic software and adjusting the module’s settings to align with the vehicle’s specifications.
For auto locksmiths, this process can be particularly useful when installing new security features, replacing a lost key, or updating software to prevent car theft.
